Third Sunday in Lent

Readings

Exodus 20.1-17; Psalm 19; 1 Corinthians 1.18-25; John 2.13-22

May the words of my mouth and the meditations on my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (Ps 19.14)

There are three complex sermons that could be grasped today. We could look at the Ten Commandments and think about why there were over 400 other laws created to protect those ten. We could look more closely at Paul’s presentation of the paradox of Grace; strength is weakness, weakness is strength; death is life, life is death. We could look at Jesus’ actions of cleansing the temple and why the money changers were there in the first place; why they were selling livestock. I’m sure it all began for good reason, but maybe it had morphed into something different.

OR…

We could simplify. These Ten Commandments can be simplified down to two. We can see the motivation for Jesus’ actions and Paul’s words in these two commandments, too. So today, please make yourselves comfortable as I play some music for you. Let the music and the words wash over you. Sing or hum along if you pick up the tune; sway, dance, stand, lie down. Whatever your body needs to allow you to be most present.
We will listen as we understand that we worship God with all of our lives, not just here on a Sunday.
We will listen as we notice along with the Psalmist that every day is a new beginning. A new opportunity for resurrection.
We will listen as we reinforce those two great commandments and how we are to be known as followers of Christ.
